Did you know?
The first enslaved person as well as the first African resident of Canada arrived in Quebec City in 1629, his name was Olivier Le Jeune and he was about 8 years old.
From 1733 to 1743, New France's executioner was an enslaved person from Martinique by the name of Mathieu Léveillé.
At the end of the 18th century, the Lower Canada parliament attempted to legislate about slavery, approximately 30 years before it was abolished in the British Empire.
This is a unique tour of Quebec city. Few people know that there were enslaved persons in New France and under the British regime. Several governors, intendant, soldiers, merchants and clergy members have thus owned black and native servants. Retrace Quebec city's history through the lens of the slave trade, its different actors and peoples of African descent who lived here since the beginnings of the 17th century.
This tour of Old Quebec will show you many interesting places that have played a role in the city's history of slavery such as where masters and slaves lived, the executioner's redoubt and sites where many events of this forgotten tale unfolded.
